STD/HIV Testing

Not too sure what tests you should get?  Here are recommendations from CDC:

  • All adults and adolescents from ages 13 to 64 should be tested at least once for HIV.
  • Annual chlamydia screening of all sexually active women younger than 25 years, as well as older women with risk factors such as new or multiple sex partners, or a sex partner who has a sexually transmitted infection
  • Annual gonorrhea screening for all sexually active women younger than 25 years, as well as older women with risk factors such as new or multiple sex partners, or a sex partner who has a sexually transmitted infection.
  • Syphilis, HIV, chlamydia, and hepatitis B screening for all pregnant women, and gonorrhea screening for at-risk pregnant women starting early in pregnancy, with repeat testing as needed, to protect the health of mothers and their infants.
  • Screening at least once a year for syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea for all sexually active gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). MSM who have multiple or anonymous partners should be screened more frequently for STDs (i.e., at 3-to-6 month intervals).
  • Anyone who has unsafe sex or shares injection drug equipment should get tested for HIV at least once a year. Sexually active gay and bisexual men may benefit from more frequent testing (e.g., every 3 to 6 months).

Here are some answers to our FAQs:

Q: Is everything kept private and confidential?                                                                 A: YES.

The STD/HIV Program functions at a high level of privacy and confidentiality. To ensure your comfort and privacy, counseling sessions are held in private rooms. Confidential client information is protected by federal and local regulations.

Q: Is there a charge for HIV or STD tests?
A: No, all tests are FREE of charge.

Q: What kind of tests are provided and what do these tests involve?
A: Blood tests are required for HIV and Syphilis; urine or vaginal swab tests are performed for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Trichomoniasis.

Q: How do I get my results?
A: Results for HIV Cannot be released over the telephone; we recommend all clients return to our office to obtain their HIV test results. Results for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis may be obtained over the telephone.

Q: How long does it take for my results to come in?
A: Test results for HIV and Syphilis (blood test) and Gonorrhea/Chlamydia are generally available on a weekly basis. We recommend you call your Counselor to see if your test results are available before you come in. Call 734-AIDS (2437).

Q: What are some of the symptoms of infection?
A: Symptoms (among others) may include:
foul smelling urine or discharge (yellow, green or white and may be watery or thick);
dysuria (pain/burning sensation when you urinate);
itchiness or rash;
lesions, sores or bumps around the genital area;
swollen testicles;
bleeding between menstrual periods;
painful intercourse;
lower abdominal pain.

Please note that not everyone will have these symptoms. The only way to know if you’re infected with an STD/HIV is to get tested.

Q: If I don’t have any symptoms, do I really have to get tested?
A: The decision is ultimately yours. Keep in mind that it is possible and very common to be infected and NOT show any signs or symptoms. In fact, many infected people don’t experience any symptoms… it is for this reason that infections continue to spread. Depending on the infection, it may take weeks, months or even years for an infected person to experience symptoms.
